Bing & Grondahl Royal Copenhagen has issued each year from 1895 a Christmas plate in the famous hand painted cobalt blue. Every plate is made for one year only. Then the moulds are destroyed. Normally the plates are sold out within a short period of time, and can usually only be bought as antique items.
Royal Copenhagen is famed for its Christmas Plates and figurines. In 1895 the first Christmas Plate is produced using newly developed underglaze techniques. Using a specific version, on which the decoration is cut in relief and interchanging layers of colour produce a variety of blue shades. The production of Christmas plates continues today.
